WINE HIT BY INVESTOR CRISIS Friday 7 November 2008
The fine wine resale market has been hit by the international banking crisis, with the Liv-ex 100 Fine Wine Index falling 12.4% in October to an 18 month low. Big name wines such as Château Lafite lead the fall, with even rare premiums, such as Château Ausone, lost more than 20% of their value in the month.
Since the beginning of the banking collapse, the Liv-ex has fallen by 16%, but the Liv-ex 500, which includes a wider range of wines at lower prices than the 100, has recorded just a 1.8% decline. Perhaps wine buyers are trading down, rather than out.
